Kimberly went to a shop in Whittier to get her Tongue pierced. She didn't know was the jewelry they were going to pierce her with was made of industrial steel. Just because it is surgical steel doesn't mean it is good for initial piercing or to be in your body for extended periods of time. Industrial Grade Surgical Steel is graded for nuts and bolts. Implant Grade Surgical Steel is for implant inside your body.

You can see the top ball just above Kimberly's tongue. The barbell she was pierced with was an Externally Threaded 12 ga 1-1/4" long barbell - that's a whole 1/2" longer and one gauge thicker than the industry standard. The correct size to use for initial piercing is 14 ga 3/4". Also, Internally Threaded jewelry is the only way to go. Internal threading means that the barbell passing through the piercing is smooth and free from tiny metal findings left behind from the machining of the threading. You can see excess skin building up around the bottom of Kimberly's piercing. When your body can't physically push out the bad jewelry, it will build up scar tissue around it instead. Basically Kimberly's body is detecting a foreign object and trying to fight it off.
Always keep medical Grade Jewelry in permanently
We removed her piercing so that she could heal. If Kimberly chooses to get pierced again she's coming back to us to have the right jewelry put in.
